Genre Group Activity.

In class we was put into groups and given a particular genre of movie to discuss as a group, we was asked to discuss the conventions of the typical things in which are seen in the particular genre we were given, my groups assigned genre was horror.

CONVENTION
EXAMPLE FROM FILM
How we applied this convention
(re-enforcing)
How we applied this convention
(challenging)
Blood
Cold Blood.

Cold Blood is a movie which involves a lot of blood, violence and brutality.

Violence is not shown as the scene ends of a cliff hanger.
Brutality
Spit On Your Grave.

A very brutal and horrific movie involving a seriously brutal act of revenge.

Brutality is not shown as the scene ends on a cliff hanger.
Death
Sweeny Todd.

The demon barber slits peoples throats in a bid to kill them, he commits a number or serial murders.

No graphic detail is shown.
Teenagers
Cabin In The Woods.

A group of teenagers go on a camping trip to the woods unaware of what the trip holds for them.
The girl is a teenage girl simply at home leading her normal life.

Violence
Saw.

Saw is a very violent movie involving all the typical features you expect a horror movie to contain, Saw the movie has many sequels and parts to continue the story.

Violence is not shown.
Victim
The Coleman Family- Orphan.

The family adopts a young girl to replace the biological child they lost, however the child they adopt is troubled and begins destroying there lives and family unit.
The girl is an average teenage girl.

Villain
Toby- Paranormal Activity.

A young child's spirit in which hunts a typical American family, Toby haunts the young children of the family until the youngest daughter agrees to spare the soul of her first born son to the demon named Toby.
We are unsure of what type of villain the story is using.

Fear
The Unborn.

The main character a young woman called Casey is hunted by her unborn twin brother, who is known as 'Jumby.'
The girl is shown to feel fear due to the fact she is alone.

Paranormal Presence
Paranormal Activity.

The family present in the movie are being haunted by a paranormal presence, a small child's spirit called Toby.

We are unsure if the villain is a human, monster or paranormal presence.
Out Of Body Experience
The Last Exorcism.

The girl is taken over by a demon who causes her to have out of body experiences.

Not used.

Our main character represents a stereotypical victim of a horror movie because she is a teenage girl, home alone leading her normal everyday life.
Her body language and facial expression is calm and relaxed at first but later turns scared and uncomfortable because she is not alarmed by being in the house alone but then hears abnormal sounds and becomes scared and anxious.
Her costume would be casual wear such jeans and a jumper as this connotes that she is at home and is comfortable where she is. This is her costume because it works well with her characters description. It relates to the stereotype of teenagers because they always want to appear as fashionable and trendy.
The setting is the girls house this setting connotes that she is leading her normal everyday life It relates to the genre because it shows that the girl doesn't expect or have any idea of what is you to occur.
She is  isn’t stereotypical because most horror movies are set in places where people shouldn't be such as abandoned houses or the woods. This relates to the conventions of the genre because it creates tension. I tried  to re-enforce the representations of the character because most victims in horror movies are stereotypical looking  teenage girls.

Film Enrichment; Freedom Writers.

In film enrichment we watched ‘
Freedom Writers’ (2007) starring..
  • Hilary Swank
  • directed by Richard LaGravenese
  • Freedom writers is a intresting and captivating American Drama film, Freedom Writers is based on a group of teenagers who attend a hign school is a deprived area of the United States which is crippled by poverty. Freedom Writers is a movie based in Long Beach Miami. There are many different people from different social and ethnic groups involved in the movie, there is a group of Cambodians, a group of Hispantic's, one white student who makes himself an outcast and feels threatened by his peers, and a black student who is bullied for his skin colour and traits. The students feel that education is pointless and that they cannot do anything to better themselves in life, the life of crime, poverty and living below the bread line is all they have. However when they are assigned a new teacher Mrs Gruwell (Hilary Swank) they take a warming to her and start taking pride and enthusiam is there education. Mrs Gruwell encourages them to keep a diary of all there feelings and past experiences.

  • Some of the main themes present in the movie are violence, weapons, povery, family loyalty, racism and social class.
  • I really liked the character ‘Mrs Gruwell' because she had a very positive influence on her class and played a very active role within the movie.
  • My favorite scene in the film was the scene where the woman who harboured Anne Frank and her family came to visit the school and gave a speech to the teenagers because it showed us that even children from such deprived backgrounds still have respect for true heros.
  • I enjoyed this film because it was very relatable, even though the conventions were typical of a drama movie 'Freedom Writers' had an interesting twist to normal drama movies. I liked the way in the end no one in the class was seen as an outcast, people from every ethnic background were united as a sort of family unit.

Conventions
Scene example from film Freedom Writers
Scene example from other films that are similar
Poverty
Poverty is displayed in the houses in which the students live.
Adulthood - the main characters live in a run down deprived area of west London.
Racism and Sterotypes
The scene where the young black boy is being bullied by his classmates for his features.
Crash - The young black man is shoot by the police officer in a case of miss thinking. The officer was thinking in a sterotypical manner and assuming the black man was harbouring a weapon.
Family Loyalty
Ava's is told throughout the movie to 'protect her own no matter what'
Flight Plan - the mother was determined not to give up the fight to find her lost daughter on board an aircraft. She was prepared to disrupt and put in danger the lives of everyone else on board the plane on her mission to find her child.
Violence
The scene in which the man is killed in a drive by in front of the young child.
4.3.2.1 - people were using violent measures such as threatening the young girl with dangerous firearms in a bid to get hold of the valuable diamonds she had accidently come into account of.

Assignment 2; Blog Analysis.

For this assignment I was asked to take 2 previous AS Media student's blogs and compare them, I had to insure I had a title page introducing my powerpoint presentation, I had to take two blogs and say what went good with each of them, what could have been better and what aspects were similar with the two blogs.

Assignment 1; Creative Media Task.

This was my first assignment set in AS Media, my task was to find out information on my choice of an aspect of the general Media, I chose to do my piece of work for this particular assignment on movie genre. 'Romance; was my chosen genre.

I think that my research and the time I took on my assignment was good and helped me to broaden my understanding of the genre I was producing my assignment on. I also included examples of types of romantic literature and movies.

However, I felt that my assignment could have been even better if I not only used written internet searches but also Youtube videos or other aspects of the Media for information. I also believe my assignment could have been better and could have been awarded a higher grade if I expanded on the information I used more.

Personally I would self grade this particular assignment at a C grade.

I enjoyed this assignment because it gave me a wider understanding of movie genre's and what a movie of a certain genre needs to included to fall into that particular category.

Here is my mindmap created on a few of the many different social networking sites available on the internet.

Here I listed some facts on social networking sites.

Introduction to AS Media.

So far I have found AS Media interesting and very enjoyable, It seems to be a very productive and exciting subject and I look forward to completing the project, I picked Media Studies as I thought it would be different and help take the stress off my more academic alevel options. During my time on the Media course I hope to gain valuable skills such as building up my confidence, learning a better understanding of making and producing movies and short scenes. So far in my Media lessons I have learnt all the different types of Media and how Media has evolved over time such as videos to dvd's. I have also learnt some vital facts and statistics surrounding Media, such as the population of Facebook, why Twitter was made and how the internet works.
